Not every child expresses themselves through words. Some children think through building. Some through clay. Some through movement, light, storytelling, or design.
At Dot to Dot, the Design Studio gives children the opportunity to investigate ideas through materials transforming curiosity into creativity, questions into research, and imagination into something real. Because creativity is not extra.
It is part of how children understand the world.
More Than Art - A Space For Thinking
At Dot to Dot, the Design Studio is not about templates, crafts, or projects that all look the same.
It is a space for investigation.
A space for wonder.
A space where children think through materials.
Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and the poem The Hundred Languages of Children, we believe children express themselves in many ways not only through spoken language.
Children may communicate through:
- clay
- watercolor
- building
- wire
- woodworking
- light and shadow
- movement
- loose parts
- storytelling
- design
These materials become languages through which children ask questions, express ideas, test theories, and deepen understanding.
A Studio For Investigation
The Design Studio is where children deepen their classroom learning through exploration and expression.
Children visit the studio in small groups alongside classroom teachers and our Design Studio Director to revisit ideas, test theories, and investigate concepts in new ways.
This is not disconnected from the classroom.
It is deeply connected to children’s ongoing research and learning journeys.
If children are exploring:

- the human body
- shadows
- nature
- movement
- emotions
the studio becomes a place to think through those ideas using materials, tools, and experimentation.
Children are not simply creating.
They are researching.
Learning Through Materials
Investigating Planets
As children explored questions about space, scale, and movement, they transformed theories into sculpture—using texture, layering, and materials to represent what they noticed and imagined.
What Makes A Home Feel Safe?
As children explored belonging, shelter, and family, they designed homes inspired by their own experiences thinking about comfort, protection, and community.
Studying The Human Body
Children investigated shape, movement, texture, and anatomy through casting asking questions about how bodies work and how we represent ourselves.
Thinking Through Clay
Sometimes children cannot yet express an idea through words. Materials become another language. Through clay, children revisit ideas, solve problems, experiment, and bring imagination into physical form

Many adults learn through doing.
Children are no different.
Sometimes an idea cannot yet be explained.
